Chrystia Freeland: A Contender for the Top NATO Job

Deputy Prime Minister's Candidacy Considered Among Strong Candidates

Early Days, with Bargaining Among NATO Members to Come

Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister, is being touted as a potential candidate for the coveted role of NATO Secretary General. According to NATO sources, Freeland is one of several strong candidates being considered for the position.

However, officials caution that the selection process is still in its early stages and the initial list of candidates may not survive the negotiations among NATO's 30 member states.

Freeland's commitment to strengthening NATO has been evident in her recent statements. She emphasized the importance of Canada's contributions to the alliance, particularly at a time when the United States has faced limitations in providing assistance.

Additionally, Freeland's expected announcement of a significant increase in Canada's defense spending in the upcoming federal budget is expected to further enhance her standing as a candidate.

While Freeland has not officially confirmed her candidacy, she acknowledged that she has a "really big job" and did not dismiss the possibility of seeking the NATO position.
